About the publication

We are pleased to present Bilder, 1998–2016, a new monograph surveying von Wulffen’s practice, published by Koenig Books and Studio Voltaire in partnership with Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich. Encompassing nearly 20 years of the artist's work, the publication includes new essays by Bernhart Schwenk, Curator of Contemporary Art at Pinakothek der Moderne, writer Manfred Hermes and artist Amy Sillman. 

This monograph coincides with The misjudged Bimpfi, von Wulffen's major new commission at Studio Voltaire, her first solo exhibition in the UK. Von Wulffen presents a significant new body of work that combines her interest in the confessional and the unconscious.

In new paintings, von Wulffen has blended traditional figuration with dream-like scenarios that disconcert in their a-historic, misplaced sense of time. Differing styles of dress, location and painterly convention are folded in on each other in ludic juxtapositions. Found works by unknown artists are pasted directly onto canvases, combined with tromp l'oeil and heavy impasto, kitschy images of fruit bowls and kittens, or reproductions of pleasant farmsteads.

About the artist

Amelie von Wulffen (b. 1966 in Breitenbrunn/Oberpfalz, Germany) lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions include: Radio Athènes (2019); Kunsthalle Bern, Bern (2019); Gio Marconi, Milan (2018); Reena Spaulings, NY (2018); Studio Voltaire, London (2017); Galerie Barbara Weiss, Berlin (2016); Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2015); Freedman Fitzpatrick, Los Angeles (2015); Galerie Meyer Kainer, Vienna (2015); Kunstforum Baloise, Basel (2014); and Gio Marconi Gallery, Milan (2014).

Recent group exhibitions include University of Applied Arts, Vienna (2019); Freedman Fitzpatrick, Los Angeles (2018); Oracle, Berlin (2018); Lulu, Mexico City (2018); Metro Pictures, New York (2017); Ludlow 38, New York (2017); Greene Naftali, New York (2017); Museum of Contemporary Art, Freiburg (2017); and MAMCO, Geneva (2017).

Her works belong to the collections of Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; MoMA, New York; FRAC Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand; and the Seattle Art Museum.

Between 2006-2011 she was Professor of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. In 2002 she was awarded the ars viva Fine Art Prize, and in 2016 the Ruth Baumgarte Prize.
