About the artwork
Mary Reid Kelley, in collaboration with her partner, Patrick Kelley, combines painting, performance and a distinctive, wordplay rich poetry to make polemically graphic and stylised videos. A First World War soldier, a grisette in revolutionary Paris, the Minotaur–Kelly resurrects different characters from the past, each of which embodies a certain set of time–specific ideas. Her historical tableaux discuss dilemmas of mortality, sex and estrangement, all navigated by characters who converse in punning dialogue. This situates the work at the junction of the comic and the tragic.
