About the artwork

For over a decade Chetwynd has worked on Bat Opera, a series of beautiful miniature paintings depicting bats in varying settings and groupings. In this special diptych edition, we experience an intimate portrait of this mythical creature, set against a warm and ethereal re-imagined landscape.

This edition has been produced by the artist exclusively for Studio Voltaire. The gallery has a unique and ongoing relationship with Chetwynd, first commissioning her in 2005 with The Walk to Dover. In 2014, Studio Voltaire presented Hermitos Children 2, the next installment of an ongoing project that takes the form of an experimental TV programme featuring a female detective who uncovers and solves sex crimes. This was the artist’s most ambitious film to date and her first solo exhibition to ever be held in public gallery in London.

About the artist

Monster Chetwynd, who was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2012, is widely known for her carnivalesque live performances, which feature homemade costumes and a varying ensemble of friends and family. These performances share elements of the bawdy anarchy of sixteenth-century wandering troupes, foregrounding key moments from art history and cultural production.

Chetwynd (b. 1973) lives and works in Glasgow, UK. Solo exhibitions include Toxic Pillows, De Pont, The Netherlands (2019); Vision Verticale part of Day Tripper, Focal Point Gallery, England (2019); Monster Rebellion, Villa Arson, France (2019); Either This Coat’s Inhabited or I’m Inhibited, Galerie Gregor Staiger, Switzerland (2019); Hell Mouth 3, Eastside Projects, England (2019); Phantasie Fotostudio II, with Esther Teichmann, John Hansard Gallery, England (2019); Winter Commission, Tate Britain, London (2018); Il Gufo con gli Occhi Laser (The Owl with the Laser Eyes), Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Italy (2018); Ze & Per, Sadie Coles HQ, London (2018); The Stagnant Pool, Galerie Gregor Staiger, Switzerland (2017): Dogsy Ma Bone, Touchstones Rochdale, UK (2017); Uptight upright, upside down, Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA), Scotland, UK (2016); Jabba, I’m Back!
