About the edition
This exclusive limited edition print has been commissioned for Studio Voltaire's Frieze London 2020 presentation. The work is a part of a recent series based on the Greek myth of Myrrh who gets turned into a myrrh tree after having committed incest with her father. In the myth, Myrrha gives birth to Adonis from her trunk, he is both her son and her half-brother, "the most beautiful man in the world". In the photomontage, the figure of Adonis has been multiplied and "queered", and features alongside anemones, which grew on the spot he died. The work also included an image of Sacheverell Sitwell's apartment and there's a portrait of his sister, Edith Sitwell on the wall.
Each print of the photomontage has a silkscreen varnish applied giving a tactile finish to the edition. The edition directly supports Studio Voltaire's exhibition, learning and studio programmes.
About the artist
Linder (b.1954, Liverpool, UK) is a British artist who is internationally renowned for her photomontages, performances, and radical feminism.
Linder’s production from the 1970s demonstrates her early interest in gender performativity and the commodification of the body. During this time, she created the iconic cover for the Buzzcocks’ single Orgasm Addict, a photomontage of a female nude whose head has been replaced with a hand-held iron. Linder combines imagery that portrays women’s sexuality and domesticity to openly criticize conventional female roles and representation. She culls these materials from contemporary and vintage hardcore pornography publications, large-scale calendars showing idyllic English gardens, as well as automobile, culinary, and fashion magazines.
Linder’s work has been exhibited widely, including recent solo exhibitions at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, UK (2020); Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, UK (2018); Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham, UK (2018); Art On The Underground, London, UK (2018); Glasgow Women's Library, Glasgow, Scotland (2018); Blum & Poe, Los Angeles, CA (2013); Tate St. Ives, Cornwall, UK (2013); Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, UK (2007); and MoMA PS1, New York, NY (2007). In 2021, Linder was included in the Liverpool Biennial, Liverpool, UK. Femme/object, her comprehensive retrospective, traveled from the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France to the Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover, Germany (2013).
