About the artwork
Known for his abstract paintings, Matt Connors has used his distinctive palette in his Studio Voltaire portfolio. Each edition is a set of 10 prints, featuring a photographic element of a male crotch against a colour-field background, and each is sold in individually colour matched frames, specifically devised by the artist.
During the early 2000s, Connors discovered a kind of homespun gay porn being crowd-generated on eBay. Sellers would list their used sports shorts to be purchased by other like-minded gentlemen, with the photos posted - more often than not - in a certain state of arousal. By cropping, adjusting and re-contextualising, the images become "weird, digital, distressed, material monochromes - looking something like a mix between a Blinky Palermo cloth painting, a Steven Parrino torque canvas, a Thomas Ruff porn/jpeg and one of my own paintings." The title of the portfolio is a kind of double entendre, referencing Josef Albers Interaction of Colour book and the 'interaction' in the image.
In the wake of a critically acclaimed survey at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, in 2011, and a solo exhibition at MoMA PS1 in New York, in 2012, Connors has garnered serious attention. His paintings take on a sculpture-like quality in the way they lean on the floor or sit within multiple frames. Connors often takes rubbings from his studio floor or drips wet paint from one painting to another, in the process testing the potential of abstraction.
