About the artist
Known for her works that bridge painting and object–making, Tompkins paintings and installations include everyday found objects. In her practice, the artist seeks to understand where objects belong in the world. She does this through an examination of the mimetic quality of paint and painting. For Tompkins, the act of painting is a process of thinking and exploring rather than simply a means to an end. Somewhere between the pictorial and the physical, Tompkins’ work attempts to find new ways of challenging and exploring paint’s transformative possibilities.
Hayley Tompkins (b. 1971, Leighton, Buzzard) lives and works in Glasgow. Recent solo exhibitions include: ‘Myth Cart’, Jupiter Artland, Edinburgh (2016); ‘Electric Magnetic Installation’, The Modern Institute, 3 Aird's Lane, Glasgow (2015); ‘Technicolor Hamburger’, Drawing Room, Hamburg (2015); ‘Space Kitchen’, Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York (2014); A Piece of Eight, The Modern Institute, Glasgow (2011); Autobuilding, Inverleith House, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (2009); and Transfer (with Sue Tompkins) Spike Island, Bristol (2007).
