About the publication
In 2021, Studio Voltaire staged a major exhibition of William Scott – the first significant survey of the artist’s practice. Including over 80 paintings, drawings and sculptures from the early 1990s to present, the exhibition tours to Malmö Konsthall in 2022. Further developing these respective exhibitions, the monograph contributes to a deeper insight into the artist’s practice, and his complex, compelling body of work.
About the artist
William Scott (b. 1964, San Francisco) has worked with the celebrated Creative Growth in Oakland, California since 1992. Covering the past thirty years of Scott’s practice, this monograph includes an expansive selection of work as well as a new essay by architect Nana Biamah-Ofosu and a conversation between Creative Growth’s Director Emeritus Tom di Maria and Director of White Columns Matthew Higgs. Scott’s vividly graphic and highly detailed paintings, drawings, and sculptures explore the intersections of community, cultural memory, faith, and science fiction. “Rebirth” is a constant subject for the artist, who reimagines the social topography of his native San Francisco as well as new, interstellar organizations. His portraits depict family members and neighbors, and celebrate Black actors, musicians, and civil rights leaders. For Scott, painting is a transformative as well as a documentary tool; a way to re-craft his personal narrative and even undertake extraordinary acts.
House of Voltaire commissions and sells unique artworks, limited edition prints and specially–commissioned homewares, objects, clothing and accessories by world–renowned contemporary artists and designers.
