About the artwork
In June 2011 Alice Hawkins travelled to Nashville, accompanied by her trusty hairdresser and stylist, channelling Dolly Parton for a week long trip.
For Hawkins, "The whole experience was surreal. From the minute I stepped off the plane, I felt I was living a dream. With my huge hair, nail extensions and high shoes, I felt I somehow invoked the spirit of Dolly. Assuming the identity of my idol filled me with a feeling beyond happiness." This work is part of a series of images that form Hawkins' personal tribute to Dolly.
About the Artist
Best known for her portrait and fashion photography and filmmaking, Hawkins creates jubilant, playful, touching and unashamedly glitzy images. She contributes to titles such as POP, Love and PonyStep. With a unique flair for storytelling and being naturally attracted to the outrageous, unconventional or exuberant, her work continually celebrates individuality across the globe. A compilation of her images entitled “Alice’s Adventures” was published in 2017 by Thames & Hudson.
