About the artwork

David McDermott (b. 1952) and Peter McGough (b. 1958) have worked collaboratively since 1980. This limited edition t–shirt coincides with the artists’ largest project to date, The Oscar Wilde Temple at Studio Voltaire. Twenty years in the making, The Oscar Wilde Temple is a wholly immersive work of art and secular space honouring one of the earliest forebears of gay liberation whilst commemorating contemporary LGBTQ+ martyrs and those lost to the AIDS crisis.

This is the first ever institutional exhibition of McDermott & McGough’s work in the UK. For this major new commission, the most ambitious in Studio Voltaire’s history, the entirety of the gallery–a Victorian former chapel–has been dramatically transformed to create an environment that wholly celebrates the Irish poet and author.

About the artists

David McDermott (b. 1952) and Peter McGough (b. 1958) have worked collaboratively since 1980, achieving notoriety in the bohemian downtown quarters of New York with their performative "time machine" experiments. This all encompassing gesamtkunstwerk saw their dress, home and art studios–right down to the materials and techniques they deployed–remain strictly faithful to late nineteenth and early twentieth century styles.

By refusing the contemporary present in favour of a fabricated past, McDermott & McGough assert a revolutionary queer agency that is well ahead of their time. Their practice is a singular and prescient voice among the numerous politically active artists that entered the mainstream during the AIDS crisis.

The duo’s work frequently addresses the homoerotic in Victorian culture whilst acknowledging the oppressive politics of the very same age. The artists use Oscar Wilde and his legacy as a lens through which to explore both the traumatic history of queer identity and the continuing inequalities faced by LGBTQ+ communities around the world.

Major solo exhibitions have been held at Kunsthalle Wien, Austria; The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; and the Provincial Museum of Modern Art, Belgium. McDermott & McGough’s works have been exhibited at Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art, Budapest; Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Germany; FLAG Art Foundation, New York; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; Whitechapel Gallery, London; Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, Geneva; Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Their work is held in numerous collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles.
