About The Artwork
Lubna Chowdhary is highly acclaimed for her ceramic works, which subvert the traditional context and utility of the medium to address a longstanding preoccupation with urbanisation and material culture. Her sculptural practice has evolved from a sustained fascination with the fusion of binary cultural and artistic influences. Chowdhary’s edition for House of Voltaire takes the form of two richly glazed ceramic pieces which are intended to be displayed together, propped up side by side or overlapping. The title, Erratics, refers to large rocks or boulders that have been displaced from their original geological context through glacial flows. While retaining their material integrity, they are permanently settled in a new, alien context. These colourful and exquisitely executed works are sold in a special presentation box. Sales of this edition support Studio Voltaire’s artistic and public programmes. The artist has a studio within the organisation’s community of 61 onsite artists.
About Lubna Chowdhary
Lubna Chowdhary (b.1964, Dodoma. Lives and works in London) subverts the traditional context and utility of her chosen medium – clay – to address a longstanding preoccupation with urbanisation and material culture. Shaped tiles, sculptural objects, and spatial installations in ceramic constitute a distinctive oeuvre that bridges the disciplines of architecture, craft, design, sculpture and painting. Chowdhary’s work harmonises a range of references, including Islamic architecture, Hindu temples, modernist design. In transcending these many categories, the work thrives on interconnection and establishing relationships between diverse aesthetic traditions.
Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including Pilar Corrias Gallery, London (2023); Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi (2023); Marlborough Gallery, London (2023); Islamic Arts Biennale, Jeddah (2023); Hayward Gallery, London (2022); Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah (2022); Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, Middlesbrough (2022); PEER, London (2021); Art Gallery New South Wales, Sydney (2020); Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai (2020); ICA Milano, Milan (2019) and Kochi Biennale, Kochi (2018-2019). Chowdhary’s works are held in multiple international and national public collections.
