About The Artwork

Working across installation, performance, writing and analogue photography, Katherine Hubbard understands images and our experiences of them as live, ongoing processes. For this exclusive edition for House of Voltaire, one of Hubbard’s contact prints from their ongoing series ‘The Great Room’ has been specially produced as a risograph at a 1:1 scale. Centring the relationship between Hubbard and her mother, Antonette Berger, ‘The Great Room’ navigates their encounters with illness, memory, changing identity and loss over a five-year period. Created in a traditional black-and-white darkroom, Hubbard and her mother coated themselves in vaseline and touched, leaned and pressed themselves directly into photographic paper, making impressions with their bodies. Unmediated by a lens, these works foreground the body as a tool capable of making its own mark, rather than being depicted by a camera.
