About The Artwork
This limited edition’s motif of a female figure embraced by a crocodile is derived from a stone lithograph work that Sanya Kantarovsky initially created in 2015 for 31st Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana — Crocodile (after L’alpha et L’Omega) — which referenced an uneasy anthropomorphism found in historic prints, such as those in Edvard Munch’s book Alpha and Omega (1908–09). The imagery of the reptile’s prickly exterior against the smooth flesh of the figure is echoed by the haptic contrast of the blanket’s soft yarn against the human wearer’s own skin. Created using a Jacquard knit technique, the front face of the blanket showcases the artwork, while a bird’s-eye pattern is achieved on the underside. Made from 100% superfine lambswool, the blanket has a noticeably soft handle and a luxurious heavyweight feel. Studio Voltaire has invited many major artists to revisit and reimagine some of their previous House of Voltaire releases for our “Greatest Hits”, all in support of The Studio Voltaire Future Fund. Kantarovsky has reimagined one of our earliest blanket releases with new colours in pure lambswool.
About Sanya Kantarovsky
Sanya Kantarovsky (b. 1982) is well known for his figurative painting, alongside his curatorial and text-based work. Dark humour is a consistent theme throughout his practice, building a sense of inner uneasiness and disquiet as his figures interact with one another- and with Kantarovsky’s artistic predecessors.
He has exhibited internationally, and his work can be found in prominent institutional collections worldwide, such as Tate, London; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; Whitney Museum of Contemporary Art, New York City; and the EMDASH Foundation, Berlin.
Following his solo exhibition, ‘Apricot Juice’ with Ieva Misčeviūtė at Studio Voltaire, a comprehensive monograph of his work has been co-published by Studio Voltaire and Koenig Books.
