About The Artwork

From Martino Gamper’s ‘Sitzung’ exhibition (meaning both seating and meeting), this chair is one in a series made for an installation at Munich’s Haus der Kunst. The chairs have been made in a variety of ways, including craft and industrial processes, and using a wide range of materials. They highlight Gamper’s unique knack for seamlessly blending different types of wood to create one harmonious piece. In this instance fumed oak has been used, a process where white oak is exposed to ammonia to darken the wood and bring out the grain pattern. Speaking about the project, Gamper says “The chairs will be experimental, fit for purpose but imperfect, rather than products they are vehicles to explore seating as a sculptural object."
