    About The Artwork

This limited edition notebook features a painting by American artist William Scott. While deeply rooted in personal history, Scott’s paintings address wider questions of citizenship, community and cultural memory. His portraits of predominantly black figures encompass actors, musicians, politicians and civil rights leaders – from Prince, Oprah Winfrey and Maya Angelou to Barack Obama and Kamala Harris – as well as self-portraits, family members, his neighbours and women from the Baptist church he has attended since childhood, depicted in this special edition.

    About William Scott

William Scott (b. 1964) is a self-taught American painter best known for his vivid portraiture of Black figures: encompassing actors, neighbours, musicians, self-portraits, civil rights leaders, family members, politicians, and women from the Baptist church he attended on a lifelong basis. Scott also has self-described as an architect: his topographic and architectural works promote a fundamental belief in the potential for positive transformation of communities and ways of living.

He has exhibited across the US and Europe with institutions such as Hayward Gallery; London, Malmö Konsthall; Malmö, Palais de Tokyo; Paris, Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Los Angeles, White Columns; New York City, and Studio Voltaire; London. Scott’s work is held in notable institutional collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art; New York City, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; San Francisco, Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Los Angeles, and The Studio Museum; New York City.

Scott works with Creative Growth, a leading non-profit organisation supporting contemporary artists with developmental disabilities.
